Song Huong Vietnamese Restaurant is one of the best Viet restaurants in Vancouver? Their special Beef 7 ways and Oxtail Hotpot is a meat fest? How could you not have heard of this restaurant? I must have been living in a well because I really haven’t heard of it until now.
We arrived at Song Huong, just north of East 1st Ave / Nanaimo. The interior is date with a beach-tikki-tropical vibe punctuated with lime green, fake plastic leave and branches hanging from the ceiling with dim lighting. The menus mirrored the same design and I was afraid I would even to turn green.
But despite the poor “décor” this restaurant offers a lot. Special dishes like tapioca dumplings and of course the aforementioned Beef 7 ways and Oxtail Hotpot. Beware, it’s like having a meat feast. It is actually more than enough for 2 people.
Bun Ga Cha Gio – Lemongrass chicken and spring rolls vermicelli noodles: It is not de-boned chicken breast / thighs. These are actual chicken pieces with some occasional broken bones. It is nicely seasoned and grilled. The spring rolls has a nice filled and lightly fried.
Bun Bo Hue – Pig knuckles, Vietnamese ham, beef shanks, congealed pig blood and served with shredded purple cabbage. The soup base was on the lighter side and definitely not spicy enough. We much prefer the hearty bowl at Pho Tan instead.
Banh Bot Loc Tom Thit Goi La Chuoi – Tapioca dumplings with minced meat and shrimp steamed with banana leaf: A chewy texture with seasoned minced meat inside. A side of fish sauce punctuated with chilies and garlic was exciting. However, often found bites of bones? Or broken ceramic? inside. I really hope I was the only unlucky one. Could you imagine swallowing it or biting onto it? Hello Dental Plan!!
Anyways, I’m sure I’ll be back for the Beef 7 ways and Oxtail Hotpot… I’ll just be careful not to bite off more than I can chew!
