Edible Canada at the Market Bistro, Vancouver (Granville Island Public Market)
Edible Canada, one of Zagat rated excellent restaurant located in the heart of Granville Island Public Market. I was afraid of tourist traps but this place proved itself to be unpretentious, delicious and adventurous. This was a place I’ve always wanted to try because of its fresh local ingredients. We came here for Valentine’s and were greeted by a stressed out waitress. Was V-day patrons really that demanding? Possibly. I can sympathize. I liked the fact EC did not overbooked the space, we were not rushed during our dining experience and there was a market place for waiting guests to explore.

We waited at the bar for some vino and our window seat wasn’t too shabby either =)
Joiefarm Unoaked Chardonnay 2001 11.50/glass: a rather bland blanc without the crisp & pure granny smith apple, citrus and pear notes
Tantalus Riesling 2011 12.00/glass : Much preferred than the above with characters of vibrant acidity, citrus and lengthy minerality.

I liked how there was an optional Valentines set menu; which was a 4 course meal for $55 complete with bone marrow and crab cakes. But we decided on optioning for their regular menu with more variety.
To start we ordered 3 appetizers which would have been more enjoyable if it was brought out quicker. By the time it reached our table, the soup, octopus and meatballs were lukewarm.

MARKET INSPIRED SEAFOOD SOUP 13: Mmmm lukewarm seafood soup brings a sense of fishiness to the experience. Slightly spicy with a creamy lobster & coconut broth, mussels, clams, seasonal sustainable fish, Thai basil, cilantro. I swear I would like it more if it was at the right temperature!

ALBERTA BISON MEATBALLS 15: Cooked medium and juicy. Fiore lardo, crispy shoestring potatoes, lingonberry gravy. A generous size without the taste of game.

SPICED GEORGIA STRAIGHT OCTOPUS 15: A beautifully charred octopus that was left on the counter slightly too long. Served with butternut squash, black beans, Libertè yogurt, pesto.

YARROW MEADOWS CONFIT DUCK LEG 24: A juicy, crispy, golden duck leg served with northern white bean cassoulet, glazed radish, parsnip puree, roasted livers, and duck jus. The roasted livers was an adventurous addition: creamy and extremely rich. The meat was tender and lean.

DAILY NOSE TO TAIL 29: Fiore Farm heritage breed pork served with 3 different cuts; served with pureed grits and market vegetables. Deliciously tender and a great variety.
We paired our meat with a red syrah from Road 13 Seventy-Four 2011 $12/glass. It was a great marriage of complex, meaty, savoury spices which lingered in our mouths.
Must say tho, my whole experience was rather discounted by the co-ed washroom arrangement. While I may share the idea of equality, but I never quite like to share a public water closet with the opposite gender. Points for improvement!

And of course beautiful flowers always charms its way into a girl’s heart… even if she is allergic!
