Meaty Sandwich in Vancouver downtown. Myer Dunn founded Dunn’s Famous Restaurant in 1927 which later turned into a franchise chain location in Quebec. Now it has migrated to Vancouver. Dunn’s is located off Robson on Seymour and offers brick walls, red seats and big booths. I wondered if this would be a legit deli sammy joint, but there aren’t many choices in Vancouver. The menu was weak and didn’t really offer many choices to smoked meat sandwiches.

 Super Montreal Smoked Meat 13.99: 8 oz hand sliced smoked beef brisket on light sourdough rye + 3.50 poutine Quebecoise (total 17.49). This was not a cheap meal and for the added price, I would have expected a full size pountine and not one that barely fills a side salad bowl. The fries were on the soggy side and the gravy wasn’t impressive and slightly lukewarm. The poutine at any New York Fries would tear this apart.

Myer’s Classic Deli Corner 11.50: Choice of a single sammy - Montreal Smoked Meat, Giant Montreal Smoked Meat, or Bagel and Smoked Salmon. Served a la carte with your choice of Montréal smoked meat sliced lean, medium or fat.

I tried the Giant Montreal Smoked Meat with half & half. I remember this was the suggestion that the gentlemen at Schwartz’s Hebrew Delicatessen suggested. It stuck with me because it was really delicious. Dunn’s however was only alright. It stands tall perhaps in a field of midgets. The meat althought moist and tender was not very flavourful. The bread was sad and began falling apart with collecting too much moisture. Perhaps it’s been sitting for awhile before it was served. Who knows.

Overall for the sticker price I expected a lot more. Perhaps one day Schwartz’s will open a second location, but again maybe not. I admire the authenticity of the original shop. I’ll just have to fly to Montreal again. Soon.
