Le Do Vietnamese Restaurant, Vancouver (East Hastings / Sunrise)
Le Do… Try the pho once and you will be hooked. Try the rice a second time and will so happy you may want to cry. Le Do is a couple of shops down from Red Wagon and puts up a fierce competition with Bao Chau. Le Do is a great Vietnamese restaurant providing you great meals, hearty portions at reasonable prices while uncompromising flavour.
Dry Vietnamese Vermicelli with spring rolls and pasted pork brochette (sausage). Crunchy and flakey spring rolls with a nice minced pork filling. The sausage is grilled on the skewer and sprinkled with crushed peanuts. Usual garnishes of pickled carrots and radish to accompany. Mix in the chili oil and pour in the fish sauce completes this dish.
The rice comes with a side water diluted soup of pork hock. It feels like Knoor’s chicken essence powder mixed with hot water.
Now the star of the show – broken rice. One of the best in Vancouver. This lemongrass grilled chicken is delicious! The rice is dry, not mushy and fragrant. Shredded fried onions add a layer of depth and flavours. Add an egg so the yolk runs onto your rice. Smother it. Mix it. Indulge in the creamy goodness.
Their minced pork and Egg Foo Yung is wonderful and it doesn’t have to be the unattractive Chinese-American/Canadian restaurant version that’s covered in gloppy brown sauce. It can be refined and neatly presented in a rectangle cake.
And last but not least. Always check out their drink menu. Their drinks can be like a liquid dessert. Heavy coconut milk, red beans, jelly and egg white! Heavenly – Even in an unattractive little restaurant!
