Shanghai Morning Restaurant 小南國上海小吃 is now one of my favorite go-to XLB restuarants. This little place took over what previously used to be Twinkle (bubble joint). Shanghai Morning is opened by previous owners of Chen’s Shanghai Kitchen 白玉蘭餐館. So if you are ever wondering why just don’t taste the same. Now you know! They’ve moved shop, sold it’s old name and opened shop as SM.

Anyways, let’s get back to the food. Particularly the Xiao Long Bao 小籠包.  Juicy little big suckers I tell you. There is a lot of soup and meat. Watch out for an explosion if not carefully eaten. The meat is well seasoned and not mushy. If you liked Chen’s before, there’s no reason this would be any different.

Pan fried buns 生煎包: these are like pan fried XLB only with a slightly thicker skin. Careful it is hot and the soup base inside is also very hot! Same juicy goodness as their famous XLB. Come early as these gets sold out fast!

Minced pork congee. A simply homey type of congee where the rice is not fully broken down. The flavours are light yet very fresh. Scallions and peanuts scattered throughout for garnish and flavouring.

Spicy Sliced Cattle Stomach & Beef 夫妻肺片: A mildly spicy thinly sliced beef that is tender and deeply marinated. The tripe is bouncy and cilantro, crushed peanuts mixed in makes this dish very refreshing. Sometimes I would get some steamed buns and stuff it all in.

This place is definately on the repeat list! In fact, the next day we went back for dinner with our folks. How could you love a juicy XLB?
