Love More. Eat Oysters. In the land of Victoria (over on Vancouver Island) comes a place with an abundance of endless aphrodisiacs. This isn’t about getting freaky in the sack, well, it could be, but more so on the endless pleasure of filling that void on your stomach!

Ferris’ Oyster Bar & Grill provides two types of dining from the same plethora of scrumptious kitchen. Upstairs oyster bar and downstairs grill. Upstairs more fine dining. Downstairs casual with an amazing garden patio!

Not sure what or how these gnomes add to the decor, I found them rather eerie… especially being seated next to them!

Located in Downtown Victoria, it is walking distance to most tourist attractions: Legislative Building, Fairmont Empress, Fisherman’s Wharf. Perhaps what attracts us most in Victoria, may not be Butchart Garden, Royal BC Museum or even Craigdarroch Castle; But the food. If you look there are some really great gems, Ferris being one.

The Seafood Caesar 8 single | 10 Double

Believe this is my third Caesar for that day. One being from Canoe Brewpub . Overboard? Absolutely not. Because once you set eyes on this cocktail you won’t regret it.

A full half shelled oyster, plump cocktail prawn, celery and spicy pickled bean makes this drink a meal on its own. Although sparsely lined with salt, I can forgive this; Because this is one damn delicious Caesar with just the right amount of heat and tomato juice. Check out that instagram action above!!

Anyways, back to oysters. Oceanwise sustainable oysters.

served over ice with spicy mango cocktail sauce (we didn’t get this one) black pepper mignonette, honey chipotle mignonette and a japanese ponzu sauce.

These are available in 8 different flavours.

  • downtown: baked with fresh sage, mushrooms, leeks, garlic and butter
  • santa fe: baked with a smoked chili and bourbon bbq sauce
  • sonora:baked with chipotle chili & lime butter
  • orient express: baked with a szechuan black bean, garlic and ginger sauce
  • texas: baked with fresh lime, tequila and tabasco
  • thai bbq: baked in a mild thai ginger sauce
  • bottecelli: baked with cracked pepper, bread crumbs, parmesan cheese & olive oil
  • rockefeller: baked with spinach, bacon and pernod. this version is not servedwith hollandaise

We chose six to sample but only one stood out from the crowd. Our pageant winner Orient Express being more attractive in flavors. First Runner up was Downtown; the additional of mushrooms was delightful and added earthiness. Second Runner up was Bottecelli; a hearty texture with a rustic feel for added bread crumbs and parmesan cheese.

We’ve been eating all day long and still we ordered two entrees.

Oysters Caliente 19
Ferris' Oyster Bar & Grill VICTORIA BC
This is a hearty dish full of Baynes sound oysters, bacon, green onions and tomatoes tossed with penne in a smoked chili cream sauce with grated parmesan. Al dente penne with a slightly heated sauce with just the right amount of creaminess. Loaded with oysters are treasured at the bottom.

Seafood Laksa 19

I talked Dave out of ordering Jambalaya (though the table next to us kept on luring us over to this dish). White leg prawns, wild salmon & Salt Spring Island mussels simmered in a spicy Malaysian coconut curry broth with tossed with rice noodles. Fragrant coconut expels from the bowl as the waiter sits it on our table. Note to consume the noodles quickly before it drinks up all the soup. Not enough broth overall.

I can bet next time when we come here he will order the Jambalaya for sure!.  A selection of shellfish and seafood with chorizo sausage and roasted chicken in rice with a spicy tomato sauce.

Next time I am in town, I must try the upstairs restaurant. I hear there are some finer dishes but I expect the same stellar performance. There are some lucky people living over in the island!
